Editor’s Note: We lost another legend today. It’s a weird feeling when the ones you came up with begin passing away. As with David Bowie this one hurts tremendously. Without Phife Dawg Tribe would never have existed, after all, the nine year old from Jamaica, Queens was the childhood best friend who encouraged Q-tip to start rapping in the first place. Their legacy, their relationship will be one that lives on in strife, but most importantly, love. Creative siblings tend to clash due to the excited abundance of their ideas, when they’re on the same page though, the result is nothing short of magic – as was the case for Phife, Q-tip and the rest of the members making up A Tribe Called Quest. Tonight we look back at one of our most popular mixtapes (Originally “In Tribe we Trust,” dropping in July of 2013), tonight we celebrate his genius. If you haven’t seen it already, please also do yourself a favor and watch the Michael Rapport documentary Beats, Rhymes and Life. It will certainly affect yours.

Today we pay homage to the Tribe. True beat originators and hip-hop influencers, without these guys there wouldn’t be half the roster of rappers and MC’s that you see today.

With sounds heavily influenced by soul, funk and jazz we take you through a journey of sound piecing together old samples, classic tribe cuts and inspired works from some familiar artists.

“7 times out of 10 we listen to our music at night…”
