TRUTH IN THE RAW

The weekend.

Every Monday, the first thing on your mind is — “How the hell did I let Monday walk back into my life? And how the hell do I get Friday back?” Let’s face it — Friday’s definitely the more attractive of the two females that make up the beginning and end of the traditional work week. The Weeknd knows this all too well. But when we talk The Weeknd, we mean the Canadian electronic R&B singer who’s turned 2011 into one smashing coming out party.

If weekends were made for sleeping in, catching up on reality TV and upholding your adult responsibilities; than in The Weeknd’s* case — he’s taking adult responsibilities to a whole nother level. A level lyrically that includes: epic adventures in debaucherous fornication, drug charged exploitations and late-night confessions of the scandalous variety…to your girlfriend. You best watch out homie.

Debuting in March of this year, his House of Balloons mixtape is sexually graphic and tempo-ed to slow all-telling perfection. It’s arguably the best album of the year. Doesn’t hurt either, when fellow Canadian Drake is blowing up your spot on twitter, and some show called Entourage, comes calling to use your music to promote their final season. Where you think up and comer, we see rising star — but either way you look at it — he’s in high demand.

Here’s a sampling of some of his lyrics:

“Don’t make me make you fall in love.””

He’s what you want, I’m what you need…

“Bring the drugs baby, I can bring my pain.”

“Girl I’ve been bad again…I forget what you mean to me, hope you know what you mean to me.”

“Condine cups paint a picture so vivid…”

Blatant disregard for inhibitions, intertwined in a foggy reality where everything goes, creates a sensual world that only makes the listener die to explore further. Combine the seductively mellow post dub step beats with even racier lyrics than above, and you have a musical chemical concoction that lands somewhere in the realm of Jodeci, mixed with Drake and a little twist of Nine Inch Nails (Remember “Closer”). It’s some powerful shit.

And he hasn’t stopped there. Dropping the mixtape Thursday a couple weeks back and with a third mixtape to complete the trilogy, Echoes of Silence, being released in the fall, you can see that he’s striking while the iron’s hot. The man who says all the things you wish you could say without repercussion, is the artist who commands attention. If not at least to chill and relax too, than certainly to set the mood. Just make sure you add this solid stuff to your bedroom rotation — you won’t be disappointed.
