Please do not confuse Will Butler for his older sibling Win. Of the brothers Butler (both of Arcade Fire fame), Will’s the zany, rowdy, eccentric version, and when that side of the gene pool hits the stage – it’s nothing short of an experience. How could it not be, with the piano playing big man touching on iconic vibes the likes of Elvis and Buddy Holly, to the Talking Heads and Freddie Mercury, as a friend of mine aptly put it, “his sound is a super tight, neat fitting version of 80’s post punk.” We’ll take it.

WHY YOU SHOULD SEE HIM:

Dull moments get killed in the presence of this Butler. Sure you can say that about a lot of artists, but Will is pure fun (we got him at the Bowery Ballroom last Thursday). “Anna” is a quintessential 80’s jam who’s horn action and melodies remind one of the golden underground of that era, as you pass time not noticing your subconscious humming his rad tunes all throughout that post work commute of yours. Don’t forget the Arcade Fire factor either, which he slightly eludes to on his new album Policy, as well as in his live act, specifically when he drops “Madonna Can’t Save Me Now,” an essential track when getting to know Butler’s style.

STANDOUT FACTOR:

Will’s keeping it weird. His sound sense is translated in the most awesomely peculiar ways, as he takes unprepped listeners on a musical joy ride, evidenced in”American Music,” which is the definition of the Will Butler experience, and also with the upbeat, oddly delightful “Witness.”

THE FUTURE:

Idiosyncratic, explosive, and time consuming, but in all the right ways. This Butler never goes wrong, he just goes different. And that’s necessary to get behind these days.
