“Ready sluts, here it goes.”

With those words, Kate Black of the band, Colorform, kicked off theirs and ours first show of the year. And true to our words, we’re making good on bringing you more of the unknown, more of the underground, more of the music that is beautifully enigmatic. Fresh rain on our hoodies and skull caps, we weathered the elements to see what Williamsburg’s Trashbar had in store for the evening.

And Colorform went. Before I tell you where exactly, let’s brake them down right quick. They are a six member squadron of talent, getting their name from the improvisational art they create during the set. How it works, is Sara (the artist), lays down a white blank canvass before Colorform cracks open that first note and as the music starts to play, Sara goes with the vibe — creating a free-flowing, soul-freeing, organized chaos piece of art that she finishes by the time the party is over. It’s Sara vs. the rest of the band in the best way possible.

Get the concept? Straight, lesson learned. Now for the music. It’s folky, it’s punk, it’s indie garage meets the right now. Back to the woman I quoted at the beginning…she’s something else. Her not giving a shit attitude, and smart ass remarks like, “my banter rules,” let’s you know she’s the head woman in charge. Her swagger contagious, she influences the rest of the band, freeing them to let go, as they take raw baselines mixed with funky cello play (played by Black’s husband Matt), all the while building out a hardcore display of industrious sound emotion. An emotion that bleeds out of Black’s artistic being, producing attention grabbing vocal shrills. She’s the driver people.

Rocking out “Separate,” all squadron members were in total sync. And before the grand rock finale, Kate made sure to tell the crowd that this song makes her pee her pants a little, expressing her true love for the music. With that, the crew rocked out their last song of the night, sending a harmonious thrill into the Brooklyn eve, and when it was all said and done, Sara (remember, the artist) had created a spectacular, magical exhibit of inspired art. Simply put, that’s Colorform ya’ll.
