How do you describe something indescribable when it’s more of a feeling than a formal description or narrative? Its place in time and space stand still, it’s feeling more euphoric and animated, than muted or drawn out.
Through the course of the summer we’ve showcased festivals, shows and events that serve as inspiration to others who share a common thread in our experience. This review focuses on a series of events that happened more by coincidence, than something we set out to cover. Headlining DJ, Kaskade, has been making his way across the country on his “Freaks of Nature” tour. If you have read any article about Electronic Dance Music within the last few months, you’ll hear stories about its rise in pop culture, and the significance this tour has had on its genre.
We are lovers of every type of artistic expression, not preachers to a specific kind. We feel music is a journey shared by everyone, so its home in your consciousness is something personal and unique to the emotions of a specific moment or memory in your life; Kaskade just happens to have played a big role this summer in our travels to visit long time amigos and new acquaintances.
What started out for us in Baltimore at 1st Mariner Arena on a 4thof July mission to Washington DC to celebrate America’s birthday, found its way to our own backyard of Miami at Klipsch Amphitheater a week later and wrapped itself up that next Saturday while visiting old roomies in our first visit to Dallas.
It wasn’t the scene so much that sparked our attention, or the desire to partake in the moment but more so the experience all together that kept us wanting more and kept us showing up. It’s the music with the lights, the bass with the buildup and Kaskade’s ability to understand timing and progression. Attending multiple shows with the same artist sometimes lends itself to the monotony of playing the same set over and over. But what bands lack in song selection, Dj’s make up for in their ability to remix tracks — adding different elements and a spontaneous feel to each performance. The set we saw in Baltimore was completely unique to the one in Miami, and even to the one in Dallas; mixing in newer dance tracks, manipulating different sounds, giving new life to a production that’s solid as a stand alone device. It’s that element of curiosity that intrigued us, telling ourselves with uncertain anticipation that the next show couldn’t top the last, but it did.
That in itself caused us to share our experience with you. Whether you’re a fan of EDM or not, Kaskade has this ability to blur the lines between genres, to make you forget the things that are wrong with the world, to make you get lost in the music pulsating through the speakers, and for however long his set lasts, he allows you to escape to your happy place until the last ball has dropped… or the last piece of confetti has fallen from the sky…that feeling is indescribable.
Kaskade is currently on tour in the U.S. and Europe for more information and a list of tour dates Click Here.
